What is the Story of Stuff?

January 18, 2008 by weilworks

I just ran across this great web site so I thought I’d post on the blog. Could be another reason to buy art locally made eh? Visit Annie Leonard’s web site and take 20 minutes to listen to her story here storyofstuff.org

“From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.”

Great food in RiNo

January 18, 2008 by hadleyhooper

The cafe at Taxi- Fuel-is up and running! Having just finished my third meal there in as many days I can’t be more enthusiastic about it. The hours are 7am to 3pm with eventual liquor service and evening hours. They do lattes and capuchinos with local Novo Coffee and offer scones, fruit and oatmeal among other things. For lunch they have sandwiches, soups and salads. Here are a few of the 18 lunch offerings:

Roasted pork, salsa verde, salsa verde, pickled red onions on ciabatta $9

Chicken salad, grapes, celery , walnut, curried mayo, cress, and tarragon on whole grain $8

Hummus with grilled veggies, feta, tomato and radish sprouts on homemade flatbread$7

All are available with chips or salad.

The soups are great, their homemade hummus and flatbread are really good with just the right amount of olive oil and lemon and they don’t over package the to-go stuff. You can find them on the northwest side of the Taxi building at 3457 Ringsby Court.fule.jpg

Discussion: Open Studio Events/First Friday in RiNo

November 6, 2007 by yellowhouseartist

Hello RiNos,

After listening to some feedback from art patrons last Friday (First Friday for November), I did a little thinking and wanted to pose some suggestions in hopes of getting a discussion going regarding open studio events. I probably saw 30 people at my event. Several people commented on how surprised they were that so many locations were not open for November’s First Friday (only 11 of us advertised events in The November Crow), in comparison to last month (i.e. Ride The RiNo). My first suggestion is this- for everyone who is participating in a First Friday event, it would be very helpful to have a printed list of other RiNo locations that are open that evening. Because RiNo is spread out more than, say, Santa Fe, this helps patrons plan out their evening, so they’re not wasting time driving to a location that isn’t open.

My second suggestion is for more RiNo locations to consider being open for First Friday events. In my opinion, the artists/galleries on Santa Fe have established quite a reputation for themselves, while we are building ours. That said, I feel like we had some momentum coming off of our events in October. With so few places open for November, I fear we may be inadvertently hurting our efforts. I know we all can’t be open every month (certainly, some months just aren’t worth it for many reasons), but I’m wondering if there’s any way we can get more folks who are sitting on the fence to try more often than not to be open on First Fridays.

Any thoughts as to why or why not this may be a good idea, or other suggestions for consistency in future events would be welcome. I look forward to reading your responses.

Sincerely,
Jared Steinberg

Riverside Cemetery Honorary RiNo

November 2, 2007 by hadleyhooper

Riverside Cemetery, our neighbor to the north, needs some love. It’s Denver’s oldest and most neglected cemetery. If you haven’t visited please do; the sculpture is beautiful (it’s an art lovers paradise) and the setting is lovely along the Platte River- despite the industrial neighbors.

The newly minted Friends of Historic Riverside Cemetery will have their first meeting Saturday November 17th at 11am. Riverside needs people with ideas, enthusiasm, time, money, or any combination of the above. More information is available on their website.

Ride the RiNo during Denver Arts Week

September 15, 2007 by weilworks

In collaboration with the Denver Metro Visitors Bureau, the River North Art District is pleased to announce its participation in Denver Arts Week.

The River North Art District — RiNo for short — is located just north of downtown Denver. The area includes a concentration of creative businesses, including architects, art galleries, designers, furniture makers, illustrators, painters, media artists, photographers, sculptors, and an array of studio spaces. Plinth Gallery

RiNo is bounded by I-70 to the north, I-25 to the west,
Park Avenue West to the south, and Lawrence to the east. While retaining its industrial character, the neighborhood has become fertile ground for established and emerging arts and artists.

During the Denver Arts Week celebration, RiNo is hosting two special events: Super First Friday on Friday, Oct. 5 from 6-9pm, and Ride the RiNo on Saturday, Oct. 6, from noon to 4pm. Over 20 galleries and art spaces will offer special exhibitions and opening receptions open to the public.

On Friday, gallery highlights include Square 101 Gallery, celebrating its first year anniversary with a special exhibition, “See and be Scene: Thoughts on the Importance of Image.” In addition, RappCity Art will host a grand opening show, “Nomads All,” with work by Roger Rapp. The Pattern Shop Studio will be donating 10% of sales to Breast Cancer in honor of its current show “Sisters.” Plinth Gallery, a new ceramic gallery on Brighton Blvd, will also open its doors.

On Saturday, RiNo is promoting the use of ‘green’ transportation to navigate the wide and progressive arts district. Explorers are encouraged to Ride the RiNo, using bikes, scooters and carpools to tour RiNo’s 30-plus studios that include glass artists, stone carvers, metal fabrication, woodworkers, painters and more. Visitors are encouraged to meet artists and meander through studios on Saturday from noon to 4pm.

Situated along the Platte River Bike Path, getting to and around RiNo is fun and easy. The arts district is located near Coors Field and LoDo, and cyclists can take exits on 31st St. and 38th St. to easily land in the heart of RiNo. Easy-to-use RiNo maps are available on our web site rivernorthart.com to help you navigate this self-guided tour. The web site also offers you the latest information and a full list of what is happening in RiNo for Denver Arts Week.

Art Scams- Artists Beware

August 28, 2007 by yellowhouseartist

Hello Everyone,

Over the weekend, I received what I believed to be a suspicious e-mail from “Garritt Miller” (his e-mail, btw, is m_garritt01@yahoo.com). It went like this:

“Hello,

My name is Garritt Miller from Owasso OK, I’m interested in buying some of your beautiful artwork for our new home in the UK.

However, i must tell you that they are very beautiful work. After a close look at your work I will be happy to buy the following carefully selected artworks;

1. Frankie Got His That Night At The Dub Club
2. Listening

Kindly get back to me with the total price of the selected Artworks excluding shipping cost, and also if there is any details regards the inspiration of the work.

Await your response,

Regards

Garritt”

Because this person did mention two of my paintings by name, I was more inclined to believe the e-mail than most scams I’ve seen, but I found a few things about the e-mail that didn’t seem quite right so I did some research and I found the following link which I would advise you to take the time to read through:

http://www.artnewsblog.com/2005/09/art-scammers.htm

I never did respond to this e-mail and certainly wanted everyone to be aware, in case you begin to receive e-mails like this as well. Be careful and protect your art.

Sincerely,
Jared Steinberg

North Metro Rail Corridor

August 15, 2007 by hughgraham

I received this information from Kim Kucera in Councilperson Judy Montero’s office. I strongly recommend that everyone take a moment to support Electric Multi Unit (EMU) as the most responsible approach to the development of the North Metro Rail Corridor. More information is available on the rtd-fastracks.com website.-Hugh

Hello Everyone,

As you know RTD is currently in the process of making a decision about which type of commuter rail vehicle to select for the N. Metro (Denver Union Station to 162ndAve) and the NW Rail Corridor (Denver Union Station to Boulder/Longmont). This is a critical decision-making time for vehicle technology for the N. Metro Corridor – we need to let them know we support electric vehicles. Please take 2 minutes to submit a comment online to the N. Metro team letting them know you support EMU (electric multiple units) for the N. Metro Corridor.

You can find the link below – just fill out the form and then click the box that says “transit technology” and write a quick comment letting RTD know that you prefer EMU because it is quieter at slower speeds, has fewer air quality impacts, is a proven technology, and is a less expensive alternative in the long run.http://www.rtd-fastracks.com/nm_14

Thank you so much for your help!

Kim
